What’s in my bag?

I receive a lot of emails requesting information about the type of cameras, film, lenses and other gear I use when photographing weddings. This page is my attempt to answer the questions about the gear I use each day.

I talk a lot about film on my blog and not so much about the other types of cameras I use. To be honest, I shoot only about 1/4 of my commissioned work with film. I started off shooting film and I love the look and feel of it. With this said, digital cameras allow me to take an unlimited number of images, process them as soon as I get to the office and upload them to my clients without delay. The picture quality of digital is outstanding in all types of situations. When the lights go off, the only cameras I use are digital. My primary camera is a Nikon D3s. Nikon makes the very best cameras, lenses and accessories of any camera manufacturer in the world.

At the same time, I love film. My film cameras create beautiful images with gorgeous tones. The prints have wonderful grain and a ton of details in both the shadows and the very bright areas (digital cameras tend not to have near as much detail in the extreme dark and light areas of an image). With modern film processing, I’m able to have my lab scan the negatives and send me a high quality digital file with my prints:).  Shooting with film cameras makes me a better photographer. When I have my Mamiya up to my eye, I’m working carefully, I’m double checking the light, watching my couple closely and taking my time to get the perfect shot. Slowing down during a high-speed wedding day environment is crucial for creating that one special image that ends up on a wall for the rest of my clients lives.

I would like to point out that a few of the very best photographers in the world use only film or a film and digital work flow (check out these film only photographers: http://josevillablog.com/ and http://canlasphotography.blogspot.com/).

Luckily for me, I’m working during a time when I have the option of choosing my cameras while I am shooting. As I said before, most of the time I have a Nikon D3s on my shoulder and I’m creating the images you see throughout this blog and on my portfolio site (HERE). At the same time, if inspiration strikes, I’m able to pull out the Mamiya or other film camera and make a different type of image in a very special way.
