A little over a year ago Katie sent me an email asking if I had any interest in heading down to San Miguel de Allende to photograph her and Dane’s wedding. I jumped at the opportunity to visit this historic town during one of its most colorful celebrations, Día de los Muertos! And two weeks ago, Michelle, PJ and I headed to the airport.
San Miguel de Allende is full of century old cathedrals, steep narrow stairways and cobbled streets. The ancient roads are so well put together that nothing nature has thrown at it over the years has affected the cobbled construction. The buildings are colorful, the tortillas warm and fresh, and the people very friendly. Each evening, the Día de los Muertos celebration was front and center with many in costumes, a gigantic earth harp in the town square, fireworks, explosions, laughter and brass band parades through the tiny streets!
A couple of days after we arrived, I met up with Katie and Dane and their small gathering of friends. I immediately felt right at home and was excited for the next days wedding festivities to begin. The night before the wedding, Dane came down with a brutal flu (that required an eventual visit to the hospital an hour before the scheduled ceremony time). I’ve never seen a groom more sick on a wedding day and was blown away to see how well his friends and family rallied in support of this amazing couple. Suffice it to say that Katie and Dane did stand amongst their friends while they made their promises to each other…they just did it a few hours later than expected.
